Arctic Council to resume meetings without Russia after protesting Ukraine war – National

The Arctic Council is deciding to sit down once more, after suspending its conferences in protest at Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

However council members say Russia just isn’t invited to the desk and future conferences will solely talk about initiatives it isn’t concerned in.

In addition to Russia, the council is made up of Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland and the USA and its agenda ranges from local weather change to Indigenous points.

Russia is its present lead, however in March all different members pulled out over its assault on Ukraine.

As we speak, they issued an announcement saying there will probably be a restricted resumption of the council’s work on points that don’t require Russia’s attendance.

The Arctic Council, which was based in Ottawa in 1996, has led to agreements on points corresponding to scientific co-operation within the North and preparation to scrub up oil spills.
