Cleanup day comes to Philippine capital’s polluted bay

MANILA (Reuters) – Lots of of volunteers joined a mass cleanup drive alongside the coast of the polluted Manila Bay within the Philippine capital to mark Worldwide Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday.

Volunteers and authorities staff, together with a whole bunch of coast guard personnel, collected sachets, rubber slippers and different non-biodegradable waste which were washed within the Manila Bay, a 60 km (37 mile) semi-enclosed estuary dealing with the South China Sea.

“This initiative will assist make our coastal space in Manila Bay higher in order that our vacationers and guests will see the fantastic thing about the bay,” faculty pupil Kendrick Lopez, 18, instructed Reuters through the cleanup drive.

Waters alongside the Manila Bay, well-known for its idyllic sunsets, are closely polluted by oil, grease and trash from close by residential areas and ports.

Critics say legal guidelines regulating strong waste are insufficient and poorly enforced, leaving governments and communities struggling to handle the air pollution disaster.

The Worldwide Coastal Cleanup Day is held each third Saturday of September to lift consciousness of the rising rubbish issues affecting coastlines all over the world.
