Alan Pope, former northern Ontario MPP, dead at age 77

Alan Pope, a former northern member of the Ontario Legislature and onetime Progressive Conservative minister of pure sources, died Friday at age 77.

Former MPP Gilles Bisson, who succeeded Pope in what was then Cochrane South driving, described him as a person who cared deeply for his household and at all times tried to listen to from the opposite facet in politics. 

“He believed within the Invoice Davis fashion of approaching authorities and the place you are fiscally conservative, however you are socially progressive,” stated Bisson.

Pope was first elected to public workplace as an alderman in Timmins, serving within the function in 1973 and 1974.

In 1977, he was elected as a Progressive Conservative MPP and continued within the job till 1990. He served as a cupboard minister within the Invoice Davis and Frank Miller governments. 

Pope ‘appreciated everybody’

Pope’s longest cupboard publish was as minister of pure sources, from 1981 to 1985.

“He was very energetic in advancing reforestation for the forests of northern Ontario as a result of on the time, there was a really weak regime in place about how forestry corporations operated,” Bisson stated.

Ray Auclair, a former Timmins councillor, advised Radio-Canada that Pope was devoted to public service.

“He appreciated everybody and did every part to assist folks,” Auclair stated. 

He added that Pope was the primary particular person to ship him a letter of congratulations when he was elected to metropolis council.

“Alan Pope was a particular man, and we will miss him,” he stated.
