Immersed within the flora of Cape City’s Desk Mountain as a toddler, artist Shannon Clegg has at all times had an affinity for unembellished, humble supplies, notably these harvested naturally and formed into modern varieties. This now lifelong inclination emerges in Bouquet, her collection of biophilic sculptures comprised of dozens of flowers dried and pressed into intricately constructed mesh. Hole and vase-like, the preserved works prolong the vibrancy and supple types of purple statice or burgundy kangaroo paw from roughly ten days to upwards of 5 years.
To create the botanical items, Clegg researched at The Herbarium at The Royal Botanic Backyard at Kew. She describes “wanting again via archival strategies for storing flowers pressed by their botanists all over the world and the sorts of tools they use to gather and press flowers.”
The work led me to create a ‘self-assemble’ glass side-table with DIY flower urgent package. The product allowed the consumer to exit to nature, gather and press flowers, after which prepare them for show inside their house contained in the glass desk… The act of slowing down, observing vegetation, after which gathering them to carry again house to show—for me it’s the essence of biophilic expertise via an object.
Following her explorations at Kew, Clegg developed a hand-mold course of that she makes use of to form and protect minimize vegetation. Every three-dimensional piece takes about six weeks to finish.
