Spring lobster fishing season to open Tuesday in parts of Maritimes
The lobster fishing season within the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence will open on Tuesday.
The Division of Fisheries and Oceans introduced on Saturday that lobster fishing areas 23, 24, 26A and 26B South will open on Could 3 at 6 a.m.
That features areas alongside the northeastern coast of New Brunswick, the north shore of P.E.I., the western coast of Cape Breton, and half of the Northumberland Strait.
The season was supposed to start out on Saturday, however earlier this week the DFO postponed the opening because of the climate and the necessity for dredging at many harbours.
Gerard Holland, who fishes out of North Lake and represents the harbour on the LFA 24 advisory board, mentioned it was a “clever determination” to delay the opening to make sure fishermen are protected.
Whereas dredging at North Lake hasn’t absolutely been accomplished, Holland mentioned fishermen on the harbour should have no drawback setting out on Tuesday.
“There have been some years prior to now that some harbours had dredging issues and the season was opened, and so they sort of received left behind,” he mentioned.
“So I am glad to see … each our advisory board and DFO took dredging into consideration this 12 months to ensure that it was going to be protected for everyone to go.”
