Horrific remedy of Aborigines
Darwin: Startling disclosures, matching the worst options of uncivilised communities, are reported from Darwin. The overall conduct of affairs by the division in control of the Northern Territory is described regionally as an open scandal. Since 1917, when correct official inspection was abolished, natives have been uncared for and neglected. They’ve been continuously drunk and disorderly, and common pitched battles have been frequent close to the compound and on the outskirts of the city. A correspondent of the Normal, the native newspaper, publishes horrible revelations in regards to the remedy of natives on far-back cattle stations. He provides names, dates, and locations, and says that he and others noticed the supervisor on one station order a black boy to be tied to a put up. He then flogged him with a stockwhip till he (the supervisor) was exhausted. As a result of a Chinese language cook dinner hit a boy on the top with a boot final, inflicting a nasty lower, the boy retaliated and knocked the Chinaman down. The supervisor lined the boy along with his rifle and made two different boys tie him up. Then he flogged him. The author asserts that the natives are enslaved and flogged, the ladies are ravished, and plenty of acts of fiendish cruelty perpetrated. The correspondent additional complains of the stunning insanitary situations of many of the stations. Illness is rife. “Some stations,” stated the correspondent in conclusion, “might be smelt earlier than being seen — the worst offenders being the most important pastoral stations.”
Pomp and ceremony for Edward
Tokyo (April 15): The Prince of Wales, dressed within the uniform of a Japanese basic (which is the honorary rank bestowed upon him), with the Prince Regent, each on horseback, reviewed this morning 14,000 troops of the First Division of the Tokyo Garrison. An uncommon function was that when the Prince rode to the reviewing floor, massed bands performed the British Nationwide Anthem, and bugle bands performed concurrently the Japanese Anthem. — ODT, 5.5.1922
