Savona karate students find success at international tournament

On Dec. 3, three Savona karate college students went to compete in two completely different occasions being held on the Richmond Olympic Oval.

For the primary time ever, karate has been added as a sport within the Canada Winter Video games, with the 2023 Video games to be held in Prince Edward Island in February. The Savona Karate Membership had two college students — Boston Lamberton and Akira Susanj — who wished to compete within the B.C. crew qualifier occasions.

There have been about 36 athletes competing for eight spots (4 feminine and 4 male) to symbolize B.C. Each Boston and Akira tried their greatest, however got here up quick and didn’t make the crew.

The opposite occasion, which was held concurrently, was the 2022 Canada Open Karate Championships, which had 667 athletes competing from seven international locations: Canada, the USA, Senegal, India, Iran, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. It was the primary in-person event for Savona college students Jaxon Forde and Akira Susanj since COVID-19, and each got here again with some {hardware}.

It was Jaxon’s first competitors ever, and he positioned sixth in his 12/13-year-old boys’ Novice kata division and third in his 12/13-year-old boys’ Novice sparring division.

Akira Susanj positioned second in his 16/17-year-old boys’ Superior kata division, and was first within the 16/17-year-old boys’ Superior sparring division.

They have been fantastic outcomes for a small rural karate membership. Congratulation to each boys, and sustain the arduous coaching!
