Raptors petition to create Canadian gun violence awareness day

The Toronto Raptors have began a petition to acknowledge the primary Friday of June as Nationwide Gun Violence Consciousness Day in Canada.

The petition revealed on Change.org asks Canadian legislators to affix the US in observing the day to honour survivors and victims of gun violence.

In a launch asserting the petition, the Raptors cited a Statistics Canada report that discovered firearm-related homicides have gone up 37 per cent over the previous 11 years, although there are giant information gaps in data assortment.

Nationwide Gun Violence Consciousness Day started within the U.S. in 2015 to honour 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton who was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago every week after she had carried out at President Barack Obama’s second presidential inauguration.

The Raptors’ petition comes after three latest mass shootings in the US.

“The tragic mass shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde and now in Tulsa, have reminded us of the stark actuality of gun violence in the US — and has sparked a nationwide dialog that gun violence doesn’t cease on the border,” stated John Wiggins, Raptors vice chairman, organizational tradition and inclusion, stated within the launch.

“With the intention to clear up an issue, you need to acknowledge the issue exists. Properly, the households and communities in Toronto and throughout Canada who’ve been impacted by gun violence can let you know it’s right here, and it’s actual.”

The Raptors highlighted the petition by movies posted on social media that includes members of the group, together with 2022 rookie of the 12 months Scottie Barnes and Toronto native Dalano Banton.
