Quebec, N.W.T improve to 7-2, on collision course at mixed curling championship
Quebec and Northwest Territories gained their morning draw matches on Friday on the Canadian combined curling championships, organising a conflict for prime spot within the championship pool in Prince Albert, Sask.
Quebec’s Felix Asselin scored two within the eighth finish to tug out a 5-4 win over Ontario’s Scott McDonald and Northern Ontario used a key steal within the seventh in a 5-3 win over British Columbia’s Craig Miles.
Quebec, looking for its third straight nationwide combined doubles title, and Northwest Territories, skipped by Jamie Koe, each improved to 7-2 and can meet within the closing championship pool draw on Friday night time.
Ontario and Northern Ontario, which defeated New Brunswick 5-2 Friday morning, had the third and fourth spots at 6-3.
B.C., Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia have been at 5-4. Saskatchewan beat Nova Scotia 10-5 within the closing early draw matchup.
New Brunswick was out of playoff competition at 4-5.
The six groups within the seeding pool performed their closing matches Friday afternoon. Alberta (3-5) defeated Newfoundland and Labrador (3-5) 7-6, Prince Edward Island (4-5) defeated Nunavut (1-8) 5-4 and Manitoba (4-5) beat Yukon (2-7) 10-3.
