P.E.I., federal government invest $20 million to provide broadband access for all
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The federal authorities and the province of P.E.I. are hoping a $20 million funding will guarantee each family in P.E.I. has entry to high-speed web by 2025.
Federal Minister of Rural Financial Growth Gudie Hutchings and P.E.I. Minister of Financial Progress Matthew MacKay made the announcement on the Brackley Commons neighborhood centre on June 2.
Beforehand, MacKay had pledged that 95 per cent of P.E.I. households would have entry to broadband web speeds by 2023. This announcement is targeted on the remaining 3-5 per cent of households.
Each the P.E.I. and federal governments will contribute $10 million every to applications and initiatives meant to attach the remaining properties in P.E.I. that lack entry to high-speed web. A key problem of this work can be about 2,000 households which can be in difficult-to-reach areas of the province.
In March 2020, the province signed an settlement with Xplornet and Bell Canada meant to hyperlink up 30,000 households to broadband-speed web.
