Garments of Grass and Flowers Fuse Jeanne Simmons’s Body to the Landscape

“Once we spend loads of time in a spot, and if we’re paying consideration, a form of intimacy develops,” says Jeanne Simmons. The artist, who’s primarily based within the Pacific Northwest, grounds her apply on this sense of familiarity and ease along with her environment. “We come to know the vegetation that develop there and the critters that roam there… We could even start to really feel that we ourselves have turn out to be a part of that place, and it’s this sense that sustains and conjures up me.”

After gathering pure supplies like branches, wild greens, and bark, Simmons constructs clothes that intertwine her personal physique with the panorama and obscure the excellence between the 2. In a single work, a full skirt manufactured from Queen Anne’s Lace trails from her waist and blends with a meadow, whereas one other piece braids dried vegetation into her blond hair, creating a feet-long braid that seems to emerge from the bottom. “Grass Cocoon” is analogous, twisting the artist’s locks into the fabric and swaddling her physique in a sheath of inexperienced. “That is how I have a good time and deepen my reference to the pure world. I suppose I’ve found that one of the simplest ways for me to turn out to be a part of the panorama… is to put on it,” she shares. “It is usually, at the least partially, a lamentation for the catastrophic lack of that connection that we’re witnessing in real-time.”
