Elaborately Embellished Heart Sculptures by Ema Shin Reflect On the Anonymous Legacies of Women

Like many Korean households, artist Ema Shin’s kinfolk preserve a family tree e book known as a jokbo, which illustrates their household tree. Shin’s ancestral document spans 32 generations, but solely male family members are represented. Born and raised in Japan, and at the moment primarily based in Melbourne, Australia, the artist describes in a latest assertion that “within the society that I used to be born and raised in, there was a prejudice between women and men, and their roles had been predetermined.
