CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Charlottetown MP Shawn Casey has been unsuccessful in his bid to develop into the following Speaker of Canada’s Home of Commons.
As a substitute, Casey’s fellow Liberal MP Greg Fergus was elected to the place in a historic mid-session vote on Oct. 3. Fergus has represented the Quebec driving of Hull-Aylmer since 2015. He’ll develop into the primary ever Black Speaker of the Commons.
Casey, who was certainly one of seven MPs to place their names ahead for consideration, congratulated Fergus through X (previously Twitter.)
“Congratulations to my good friend and colleague, @GregFergus, on being elected as the brand new @HoCSpeaker. As the primary black Speaker within the historical past of the Home of Commons, it is a historic second for Canada.”
There has by no means been a Speaker from P.E.I.
The vote was held as a result of the previous Speaker, Anthony Rota, not too long ago resigned from the place.
Rota confronted calls to step down from Conservative, Bloc, NDP and Liberal MPs after he gave recognition to a Ukrainian veteran of a Second World Battle division that fought for Nazi Germany. Following a speech earlier than Parliament by Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Rota launched the 98-year-old man, Yaroslav Hunka, as a Ukrainian-Canadian veteran from that warfare “who fought for Ukrainian independence towards the Russians.”
It’s unclear if Rota was totally conscious that Hunka’s division – the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, which was often known as the first Ukrainian Division – was a Nazi unit.
The incident turned a world scandal. Rota mentioned he alone had invited Hunka into the legislature and that workers inside Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s workplace weren’t conscious of Hunka’s previous.
