Astros’ Tucker tries to steal home amid PitchCom malfunction
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston’s Kyle Tucker was thrown out Thursday night time when he tried to steal house whereas New York Yankees starter Luis Severino tinkered together with his malfunctioning PitchCom system.
Alex Bregman had simply hit a two-run double to place Houston up 2-0 and Tucker was on third with two outs within the third inning.
With Yuli Gurriel at-bat, a pissed off Severino took off his cap and held the PitchCom speaker to his ear, apparently unable to listen to directions from catcher Jose Trevino.
Tucker noticed Severino was distracted and tried to sneak home. Severino had the PitchCom earpiece in his proper hand and needed to rapidly maneuver to get the baseball again in his throwing hand. He threw house whereas nonetheless holding his cap, and his throw narrowly beat Tucker and ended the inning.
The PitchCom digital pitch-calling gadgets, which transmit indicators from the catcher to the pitcher, have been launched to the majors this season. The system was designed to halt signal stealing within the wake of the Astros’ 2017 scandal.
