Nigeria’s Rivers state police free 15 children abducted for trafficking

YENAGOA, Nigeria (Reuters) – Police in Nigeria’s Rivers state rescued 15 kids who had been kidnapped to be able to be trafficked, police stated in an announcement on Tuesday.

The youngsters, starting from 4 years to fifteen years outdated, had been discovered with a 44-year-old lady claiming to be a nun within the southern state in Nigeria’s Delta area.

Police arrested the lady, Maureen Wechinwu, and stated they had been working to reunite the youngsters with their mother and father.

“Investigation is ongoing with the view of arresting different suspects linked within the case,” Eboka Friday, Rivers state commissioner of police stated within the assertion.

One rescued nine-year-old boy had been taken from a market in October 2020 in neighbouring Bayelsa state and had already been offered to a lady in Lagos and returned to Wechinwu, police stated.

Human trafficking is frequent in Nigeria, based on the U.S. State Division and non-profit group Pathfinders Justice Initiative, with kids kidnapped or coerced into home labour, intercourse work or different compelled labour.
