Moldova places former President Dodon under house arrest
KYIV (Reuters) – A Moldovan courtroom on Thursday positioned former president and pro-Russian opposition chief Igor Dodon underneath home arrest for 30 days to permit prosecutors to research allegations of corruption and treason.
The Ciocana district courtroom in Chisinau, the capital, made the order two days after Dodon’s home was searched and he was positioned underneath detention for 72 hours.
Talking to the media after the courtroom listening to, Dodon mentioned the case was politically motivated, a cost the federal government has rejected.
Dodon informed journalists that the decide was finishing up a “political order” from pro-Western President Maia Sandu, who succeeded Dodon in 2020. Dodon mentioned he had no property aside from that which he had formally declared.
The federal government has rejected the allegation of political interference with Justice Minister Sergiu Litvinenco saying the case can be carried out “in strict accordance with the regulation.”
Dodon’s arrest comes at a time when relations between Moscow and Chisinau are more and more strained.
The Kremlin earlier mentioned it was involved at studies that Dodon had been detained, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov calling on Moldovan authorities to respect his rights.
In current months Russian separatists in Moldova’s Transdniestria area blamed neighbouring Ukraine for what they mentioned had been shootings, explosions and drone incursions, elevating fears that Moldova could possibly be drawn into the battle in Ukraine.
