“Between Mountains, Valleys” by Photographer Athena Torri

Presently based mostly in Beacon, New York, Ecuadorian-Italian artist Athena Torri immigrated to america in 2000. Of their sequence, “Between Mountains, Valleys,” Torri grapples with their private narrative inside the Ecuadorian Andes, explaining that the work highlights “a historical past of colonization that manifests in each the nation of Ecuador and in myself as a mixed-race, queer, and non-binary individual.” Participating with Andean folklore to look at themes of gender, sexuality, and race in postcolonial South America, Torri’s photos depict the collision of the sacred and mundane worlds in on a regular basis postcolonial life.
